A cap of your own

Your own scrub cap is one of the few items of healthcare clothing that is allowed to look like something. Every other garment belongs to the organisation, in the organisation's colour — the cap is what staff choose themselves, and it shows in the range: dinosaurs, unicorns and whales for those who work with children, leaves and flowers for those who want something calmer.

When meeting a child, the pattern actually does a job. It is the first thing the eye catches, and a second of distraction at the right moment is worth more than it costs. With adults it is more about recognition in a team where everyone otherwise looks the same.

How to choose a design

Start from who will see the cap. If you work with children — paediatric ward, paediatric emergency, maternity, paediatric dentistry — the figurative designs do the most good: the dinosaurs, unicorns, whales and rabbits. If you mainly work with adults, leaves, flowers and stars with planets are the patterns that suit work clothes without taking over.

If you only have one cap, it becomes your recognisable detail, and then the design is worth some thought. If you have several in rotation — which most people who wear their own cap every shift do, since they are washed — you can mix freely and pick what suits the day.

Check the dress code first

The rules on personal headwear differ between workplaces, and particularly in operating theatres and maternity units there are local requirements on what may be worn and how it must be washed. That depends on the dress code where you work. Many organisations allow and appreciate personal caps, while others — especially in surgery and maternity — have their own requirements for headwear and laundering. Check with your workplace before you buy, and especially before ordering for a whole team.

Which design suits a paediatric ward?

The dinosaurs, unicorns, whales and rabbits work best when meeting children — they give something to look at and talk about in a situation where attention would otherwise go somewhere worse. Flowers, leaves and planets are the calmer designs that work anywhere.

How is the cap washed?

Care instructions are given on each product page. If your workplace has requirements for how work clothes and headwear must be washed — for example a certain temperature or laundering through the organisation's own service — those are the rules that apply, not the general washing instructions on the garment.
