Reflex hammers

Three models of reflex hammer — Taylor, Babinski and Berliner. The difference is size, weight and the shape of the head; what decides the choice is how the hammer will be carried.

The reflex hammer is used to test tendon reflexes during a clinical examination and is standard equipment in the clinic, the emergency room and in training. Here you will find the three classic models, plus a starter kit for those equipping themselves from scratch.

The models

  • Taylor — the small model with a triangular rubber head and flat handle. The most common one, and the only one that fits easily in a coat pocket.
  • Babinski — the classic model with a round head and a long, slender shaft.
  • Berliner — also a round head, in the larger and heavier class of hammers.

In practice the difference is weight and reach. A small hammer is always with you but demands more of your wrist; a heavier hammer does more of the work itself, but becomes something for the bag or trolley rather than the pocket. If the hammer is to be personal and always at hand, that counts for a lot; if it is to stay in the examination room, size matters less.

Care and companions

The reflex hammer is an instrument that lasts for decades and almost never breaks — what happens is that it disappears. Mark it with your name, and clean it between patients according to your workplace's hygiene routines, just like other equipment that touches the skin. The rubber head is the part that ages: if it becomes hard and cracked, replace the hammer, because then it no longer bounces as it should.

Which reflex hammer should I choose?

Taylor is the small model with a triangular head and the most common choice, above all because it fits in a pocket. Babinski and Berliner have round heads and are larger and heavier. If the hammer is to go with you all day, most people choose Taylor; if it is to stay in the examination room, size matters less.

Do students need their own reflex hammer?

Most people in healthcare education get their own early on, for the same reason they get their own stethoscope: the ward's hammer is rarely there when you need it. A reflex hammer also lasts a whole career, so it is normally a one-time purchase.

How do you clean a reflex hammer?

It is cleaned like other equipment that comes into contact with skin, according to the hygiene routines at your workplace — normally wiped down between patients.
