Who is standing in the room

A patient room is visited by many professional groups over the course of a day, all in identical clothing. The ID badge often sits too low, faces the wrong way or has text too small to be read by someone lying down. A sign with the professional title solves this from a metre away: the patient and relatives know who they are talking to and do not have to ask.

It is most useful where you are new or temporary — as a student, covering a shift, as agency staff on a ward where nobody recognises you — and in situations where roles need to be clear quickly, for example in emergencies with many people in the room.

Placement and care

The sign is attached with a clip, so nothing has to be threaded through the fabric, and it moves between garments when you change your work clothes. Wear it high on the chest — the text should be readable by someone lying down, not just by the person standing next to you. Take it off before the garment goes in the wash, just like your watch and name tag, and it will outlast your work clothes.

The title on the sign is what determines its usefulness. Nurse, doctor and medic are the three roles that most often need to be told apart in the room, and the three that patients and relatives find easiest to relate to without anyone having to explain the organisation. Does the sign replace the ID badge?

No. The ID badge is still what identifies you and opens doors and systems. The sign is a complement that makes your role readable at a distance, and the two are usually worn together: the card on a badge reel and the sign visible on the chest.
